drumming workshops for schools
Come and connect with the ancient language of rhythm, share in the strength, harmony and universal power of the drum.. These workshops and programs are an innovative and fun activity that inspire a sense of community amongst students, promote creativity and cultural awareness. Great for Multi-Cultural Days, Music Development Programs, School Open Days, Theatre & Drama Projects and School Holiday Programs.
Students will learn:
African
rhythms for djembe, dun dun, and bougarabou, songs and chants, the art of
jamming, improvisation & body percussion
These workshops are dynamic and educational. They are interactive and all participants will expand their listening & music skills and their ability to work together with greater group awareness and a deeper understanding of African culture and the power of rhythm.A possible workshop description for your school: A short performance (Drum and Dance) and a demonstration of African drums and other instruments Talk on the relationship of the drums to African culture. Preliminary rhythm work to warm up, such as clapping /body percussion etc (a good ice breaker). All students are then seated and standing in a circle behind various African drums and percussion instruments We then teach 3 to 4 drum parts one at a time to the group, once the group has an understanding of these individual parts and can play them confidently we divide the group up into 3 or 4 teams and have each team play one of these parts. Once the rhythm is established and the drum parts are being played together as a whole, we will then introduce call and response using various drum signals and breaks. This part of the workshop is exhilarating and lots of fun. We can also incorporate a dance component into the workshop if desired. We have professional African dance facilitators that will lead half the group through simple dance moves while the rest of the group continues to plays the music. This is a high-light and a great activity for all involved
In bringing the Rhythm Konnections experience directly to schools, we create a high energy activity that provides immediate gratification and feedback while encouraging self expression and self esteem through cooperation, contribution, and musical communication. Drumming in a group gives students a sense of belonging and community.
