Arriving at the venue for the
interactive team building component of the conference,
Drumming circle: We unpack 100
drums and form a circle of chairs placing a African drum in front each
chair, the drumming circle is complete, ready for the tribe. We then setup our
own drums in the centre of the circle an array of large base drums and hand
drums. some facilitators strap on their drums ( Djembes ) on others pick up
their sticks and get in position behind their base drums ( Dun Duns ).
The delegates enter
the conference room surprised at what they see.
The lead drum signals.....then
the drums in the centre of the circle burst into life.....interweaving
rhythmic patterns......unison drum signals explode together demonstrating
the power of unity......the base rolls through the floor and up into the
delegates they feel the power of the drums.....then
a drum crescendos high above the others and signals the end.....the drums
fall silent in unison with a load boom.
The group is then instructed to take a seat behind a drum of their choice
some are base drums that are played with sticks and other are hand drums.
They start to play
with the guidance of the facilitators smiling, laughing and supporting
weaving a tapestry of rhythm learning the different parts that make up the
music finding support in their sub groups, learning to listen to the song of
the other groups and of the whole.
Their communication
skills are expanded through
the different
drum signals (call
and answer, stops and starts etc) which
demonstrates the power of a unified response to change.
Now
the group is drumming and playing music as a whole, responding easily to the
different drum signals. Depending on the group we can then introduce a dance
that goes with the rhythm our professional dance facilitators then encourage
and lead half the group through simple African dance movements while the
rest of the tribe makes the music, this part of the workshop is exhilarating
and loads of fun and adds a new element that strengthens the team building
aspect connecting mind, body and spirit. From this we feel the exhilaration
of.....being in time.....being
on time.....being in
the right place at the right time.
Returning to their
drums with greater enthusiasm we crescendo the rhythm pumping rasing the roof of the conference
room.....
The lead drum then signals
the end with one unified response the drums finish in with a load boom......people
jump from their seats shouting and hooting.
Charged and motivated
the tribe is ready......
