Every year Rhythm Konnections celebrates the Summer and Winter with a camp of drumming, dance and ceremonies in a beautiful natural setting. These camps are always an unforgettable opportunity to experience a passionate week of ancient African culture. Together we will learn new rhythms and dance new dances, make music, share meals, care for the children, laugh, swim and create community.

Mohamed Bangoura
advanced drumming


Mohamed Bangoura better known as “Bangourake’” grew up in guinea west africa. he was also born into a griot family. he was a member of the world renowned ‘percussion de guinea’he moved to Australia in 1998 &has been sharing his talent as an awesome performer & inspiring teacher. He is described in his homeland “as the man with hands on fire”.he is also known in australia & the world as the master of djembe. Bangourake’ will teach traditional djembe’ & doundoun rhythms & dance.
Bangourake’ is a true master through initiation & ability.He is proud of his heritage & his responsibilities as a griot as it is his passion to share his culture with all who are lucky to learn with him.

Valanga Khoza
singing & vocal percussion

 

South African born & bred Valanga grew up singing & playing music. The Voice is the oldest instrument in the world & Valanga makes extensive use of it: singing, rapping & making incredible music, driven by irrepressible township beats! He will be teaching vocal percussion, singing & sharing his wonderful gifts of storytelling with music. A real treat!!! Valanga is well established in Aust. & internationally as a teacher & performer in multicultural music. He has supportedlucky dube, geoffrey oryema & performed with ladysmith black mombassa. In Aust. He plays with Zebra Crossing & tours nationally major music festivals as a soloartist.

Fode Mane Dancing & Bougarabou

Fode is an inspirational & passionate teacher & performer of West African drum & dance. HE IS A professional dancer & drummer from Senegal & WAS formerly a lead dancer & choreographer with the award-winning performing arts troupe, Bakalama, based in Dakar. He has over 15 years experience performing with the troupe & has toured extensively in Europe. HE HAS a repertoire of
Senegalese & Guinean traditions of dance & rhythms. fode is renowned for his energetic, dynamic & graceful style. Fode is from the Casamance region of Senegal. his particular ethnic group is Djola specializing in Bougarabou drumming & its associated cultural traditions of dance. He also plays sabar, djembe & doun doun. Fode now resides in Newcastle & is excited to be able to share his exceptional talents & cultural traditions.

 

 

Traditionally griots are historians of African culture masters of dance, singing & playing all African instruments. It is past on from one generation to the next. This ancient tradition is still alive today in Lamine, Fode and Yacou.

Each session is 2 hours, the evenings will be spent jamming, with the m'bongi on Sunday night around the fire.

m'bongi ( healing circle)

One of the most ancient Zimbabwean traditions is a community gathering that is focused on healing & celebration using music, dance and storytelling. It will take place around a fire under the stars. This is an opportunity to experience the music in it’s true cultural context.

The camp will be held at Lake Ainsworth Sport & Recreation Centre. Which is superbly situated on the shores of the beautiful freshwater tea tree lake and only 50m from the expanse of the Pacific Ocean & white sands of 7 mile beach. The centre is 2 km from Lennox Head, 20mins south of Byron Bay.

This retreat was a great success many thanks to our teacher and facilitator Chris Berry. Together we experience a passionate 3 days of ancient African culture. We learn new rhythms and dances, shared ceremony, made music, shared meals, laugh, swim and create community, in the beautiful natural setting of Eagle Heights Mt Tamborine Gold Coast Hinterland .
